About Me

I began learning the piano at age 8 with private lessons. At 14 I attended the Northern School
of Music junior school, in Manchester, where I gained my
A.B.R.S.M. grade 8. I became a full time student of the
Northern School aged 16.

Two years later the school
amalgamated with the Manchester College of Music and I became a
student of the Royal Northern College of Music. I was very
lucky to be chosen as the pianist for the R.N.C.M. big band,
giving me the opportunity to diversify from my classical
studies. We had great fun playing for a week at the Edinburgh fringe! I also gained my L.T.C.L. diploma during my four years
at the R.N.C.M. Studying along with me during this time were
renowned pianist Peter Donahoe and pop singer and pianist
Howard Jones. (I bought my first electronic keyboard from Howard!)

After my excellent
student days I worked both teaching and playing, with agency work,
residencies and cruise ships.
I have taught as a peripatetic in schools and privately for many
years, with hundreds of my students gaining A.B.R.S.M. exam
passes. I like to encourage students to experience different
styles of music from classics to popular, pop, blues and jazz.

Composing and arranging has always
been a passion and I enjoy arranging music for my students. This
gives them an opportunity to play their favorite pieces at a
level they can manage. Many of my arrangements can be downloaded
for free from this web site. I have also written a set of tutor
books using the knowledge I have gained over the years of
teaching. The compositions in these books have been created with
a more modern feel and an emphasis on fun! I have also written
books on music theory, chords, harmony and
composition.
